The Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico
is located in the metropolitan area of San Juan, occupying 289 acres in the heart of Río Piedras. It is recognized by the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as an Intensive Doctoral/Research University, a classification that puts it among
the best universities in the United States and makes it the only one of its class in the Caribbean and Latin America. The Río
Piedras Campus is the oldest and largest of the eleven campuses that form the University of Puerto Rico system. With approximately
21,539 students–3,629 of which being graduate students–the campus offers a variety of academic programs to those pursuing
bachelor degrees, advanced degrees including master’s and doctoral degrees, and professional degrees.
The Río Piedras Campus boasts a distinguished faculty of unique diversity. They are professionals who stand out for their
performance in the classroom, their excellent labor in research, and their wide variety of works published locally, regionally,
and internationally. This campus combines some of the most distinguished Puerto Rican intellectuals with other persons of world recognition.
These writers, scientists, artists, and architects make for a dynamic, stimulating learning experience.
The Río Piedras Campus has been recognized for educating competent professionals in important fields such as the natural,
social, and information sciences; planning; business administration; architecture; law; communications; and humanities. Every year,
the campus grants approximately 75 doctoral degrees, 250 master degrees, 140 juris doctor degrees, and 2,200 bachelor degrees to
its graduating class.
On the threshold of the twenty-first century, the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico is following new
trends in higher learning through the creation of innovative multidisciplinary, combined-degree, and bachelor degree programs that surpass the
traditional boundaries of many professional disciplines. Through various initiatives, it has refocused its efforts on the quality
of teaching and learning of all programs institutionalizing an evaluation process for continuous improvement to its graduate study
programs, and further development of its research centers of academic excellence, so that it may maintain its status as the most important
center of learning on the island.
