MASTERS PROGRAM
Requirements for Admission
In addition to the
general requirements for admission to graduate studies at the
Río
Piedras Campus, the student must satisfy the following specific
requirements:
- An undergraduate major in Philosophy, or
the equivalent. It is the student’s responsibility
to show official proof of the degree; if the degree is
an equivalent foreign degree, it must be validated by
the Office of Admissions.
- A
minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 for their
baccalaureate studies, and also a 3.00 grade point average in
the Philosophy major. Students with a lower grade point average
may be admitted in exceptional cases.
- Sufficient knowledge of
both Spanish and English to conduct research and to study in
both languages, but principally in Spanish. A comfortable command
of any philosophical text in English is obligatory. If necessary,
the student will be responsible for correcting any deficiencies
by way of complementary courses.
- Two letters of recommendation.
Requirements for Graduation
- Complete 10 courses of three credits each. These include
four required courses, one in each of the following areas:
- Logic, Philosophy of Logic, Philosophy of Mathematics
- Philosophy of Language
- Theory of Knowledge, Philosophy
of the Social Sciences
- Metaphysics, Ontology, Philosophy
of Art, Philosophy of Religion
- Practical Philosophy.
- Of the six remaining credits, four
may be freely selected from the course offerings of the
department, and two from any other graduate program of the
university.
- Pass the comprehensive examination in two areas
of Philosophy.
- Present a thesis that shows appropriate research
capability.
- Demonstrate knowledge of a third language (French,
German, Latin, or Greek).
