The Department of Chemistry's Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowships Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, provides awards for students who are entering doctoral studies in Chemistry. This program is aimed at students who are planning to pursue academic careers upon completion of their doctoral or postdoctoral studies. Thirty-two graduate students have participated in this program since 1990 and thirteen have already completed their Ph.D. degrees. During the 1999-2000 academic year there were thirteen GAANN Fellows and four ex-Fellows are working on their dissertations in the Graduate Program. Applications are available in the Department of Chemistry. Since awards are need-based, recipients must file a Federal Financial Aid Form (FAFSA) to determine their eligibility.
GAANN Fellows are expected to:
- Be interested in an academic career.
- Maintain a 3.5 or better GPA.
- Participate in Summer TA Workshop (both in 1st year and as assistants in their 2nd year).
- Participate in NSF-MGE mentoring workshops & as mentors.
- Attend workshops and seminars on teaching methods.
