Scholarships for the Support of Graduate Student Research and Professional Development
The purpose of this Scholarship Program of the Dean’s Office of Graduate Studies and Research (DEGI) is to encourage research by supporting graduate and undergraduate students to participate in academic and cultural events. In addition, financial assistance is provided to students who travel to collect primary data for their research. DEGI’s evaluator committee will be constituted of DEGI’s Dean, the Assistant Dean of Research, and the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Coordinator. The allocation of funds will depend on the available budget.
Scholarship to Participate in Academic and Cultural Events (Undergraduate and Graduate Level)
The scholarship will be awarded to qualifying students on both the undergraduate and graduate levels, only once during their academic degree. The presentations must be the result of the student’s active research in their field and, in turn, promote completion of the degree. No sponsorship will be provided to attend or participate as an observer in any workshop, seminar, course or academic/cultural event; to purchase audiovisual equipment to witness the event; or to make contracts or service payments for the creation and/or exhibition of the research; or for presentations as the result of research together with your mentor or the project’s principal investigator. Sponsorship must be requested for trips to Cuba at least 65 days in advance
This scholarship will provide partial or full financial support for registration fees for virtual events. The allocation of funds will depend on the available budget and the outcome of the application evaluation.
Undergraduate level students:
Applications that meet the requirements to present the research/creation in the form of a poster, lecture, conference or forum will be considered.
Graduate level students:
Applications that meet the requirements to present the research/creation as a paper, conference or forum will be considered.
The eligibility requirements are:
- Be a full time student (8 credits for graduate students or 12 credits for undergraduate students).
- Be within the designated time period to complete the degree, according to the current regulations.
- Have satisfactory academic progress, as established by the School or Program.
- The proposed activity must fulfill the purpose of advancing the student’s research work in their discipline.
- If necessary, must have authorization from the appropriate Institutional Committee—CIPSHI or IACUC.
The application must be submitted accompanied by the following documents as a single file through the digital form:
- Acceptance letter or invitation for your presentation.
- Copy of the schedule for the academic or cultural event.
- Summary or fragment of the presentation.
- Submit evidence of the travel costs.
- Letter of recommendation and endorsement from the thesis, research or creative project’s mentor or supervisor.
- Certification of eligibility signed by the Mentor or Supervisor, Graduate Coordinator, Department or School Director and Dean of Faculty, as applicable.
The application and required documentation shall be sent to DEGI 30 calendar days prior to the date of the activity in which the academic and cultural event will take place.
Applications that are favorably accepted must complete the forms required by the Institution through DEGI. At the end of the experience, the student will provide a detailed report of every activity and explain the impact it had on their research project towards completing the degree in the established time. The report is due on or before 30 days after the academic or cultural event. By accepting the DEGI funds, the student agrees to present their work at the Graduate Student Congress of Creation and Research of the Río Piedras Campus. Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received at DEGI.
Scholarship for Research Trip (Graduate Level)
This scholarship is aimed towards graduate students that require to travel outside of the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to collect primary data for their research. A maximum of $1,000 may be awarded and it can only be applied for once during the academic degree. This scholarship will not provide funds to participate as an observer or attendee in any workshop, seminar, course, conference or activity. In no way will it be available for travel as part of any course, or to cover visa or passport costs. The allocation of funds will depend on the budget available considering the time required, activity proposed and the outcome of the application evaluation.
The eligibility requirements are:
- Be a full time graduate student (8 credits).
- Be within the time frame for degree completion as per current regulations at the graduate level (Academic Senate Certification 38, 2012-2013 or Certification 95, 2019-2020).
- Have satisfactory academic progress, as established by the School or Program.
- Have your research proposal approved and have begun research for your project or creative activity.
- Must have authorization from the appropriate Institutional Committee—CIPSHI or IACUC—as applicable.
- Sponsorship must be requested for trips to Cuba at least 65 days in advance
The application must be submitted accompanied by the following documents as a single file through the digital form:
- Letter of recommendation and endorsement from the thesis or research project’s mentor or supervisor, specifying the need to make this trip in order to obtain access to primary sources, which cannot be obtained in any other way.
- Certification of eligibility signed by the Mentor or Supervisor, Graduate Coordinator, Department or School Director and Dean of Faculty, as applicable.
- Evidence of approval of the research proposal.
- A proposal detailing the program or research plan to be carried out and the justification for the trip (maximum 2 pages).
- Copy of CIPSHI or IACUC authorization, as applicable.
- Acceptance letter from the institutions where the data will be collected along with evidence of the institutional procedure (Memorandum of Understanding).
Applications that are favorably accepted must complete the forms required by the Institution through DEGI. At the end of the experience, as scholarship recipient the student must submit a detailed report of each activity performed and explain the impact it had on their research work with the aim of completing the degree in the established time. The report is due on or before 30 days after the academic or cultural event. By accepting the DEGI funds, the student agrees to present their work at the Graduate Student Congress of Creation and Research of the Río Piedras Campus. Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received at DEGI. The allocation of funds will depend on the available budget.
NOTE
- This scholarship program does not support student attendance or participation in courses, seminars, or workshops.
- This scholarship program does not support activities that originate as a requisite or during course activities, whether graded or ungraded.
- Applications for funds submitted incomplete or with less than one month prior to the anticipated date of travel will not be accepted or evaluated.
